Fall Pet Tips: Preparing For The New Season

fall pet tips

Can you believe that summer is almost over already? With the change of every season comes new lifestyle changes for humans and animals alike. What does the new season mean for your pet? It means you have to be aware of new things to keep your pet happy, comfortable, and, most of all, safe. What exactly should you look out for? Keep reading to learn some new fall pet tips!

Watch For Ticks

The back end of August and beginning of fall usually means that ticks will begin to rear their ugly heads once again. Ticks are usually found in tall grass, bushes, shrubs, trees, etc., so you should be wary of every place you bring your pet. Take extra care to not go off-trail if you bring your pet on a hike and to check their body for ticks once you finish.

What does a tick bite look like? It should look like a hard bump on the skin, similar to a mosquito bite, and it could look red, black, or brown. If you think your tick bit your pet, do not try to remove it yourself. Watching for ticks is among the most important fall pet tips, so be sure to bring your companion to a vet or animal hospital for professional tick removal.

Let Fur Grow

If you have to groom your pet or bring them in for fur trimming, you should hold off on that for the time being. It’s obviously important to keep the fur to a length that doesn’t impede your pet’s daily living, but you can let it grow out for the fall and winter. Your pets need their fall and winter coat just like you do! If you do need to keep your pet’s fur or hair short for whatever reason, you should consider adjusting your thermostat or buying them a jacket for when you take them outside.

Train For Guests

With Thanksgiving and Christmas on the horizon, you should get your pet accustomed to having guests over if they aren’t already used to it. Introducing them to a bunch of new people at once can be very overwhelming and stressful, so you’ll want to slowly ease your pet into meeting new people. Start by having a couple of people over, see how your pet reacts, and keep increasing the count from there. Keep doing this and your pet will be ready to welcome all sorts of guests with open paws when the holidays come around!
